Brief History of Nigeria Cybersecurity Trends:

Nigeria has a newly enacted national cyber security strategy, known as the National Cyber Security Policy and National Cyber Security Strategy. This strategy helps coordinate and guide national cyber security efforts and was established on May 2015. It is intended
to manage security threats in cyberspace in line with the overall national security objective. So far, the strategy has been particularly helpful in improving Nigeria’s cyber resilience. The Government of Nigeria has plans to adopt personal data protection legislation in the future and for now, cyber crime laws have been recently enacted. Nigeria’s National Policy Framework seeks a harmonized security strategy, which will respond to the dynamism of the national security threat landscape. One such emergent national security threat is the risk posed by coordinated cyber attacks on national infrastructure.

The primary agencies charged with protecting against cyber crime, are the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practice and other related offences Commission (ICPC), State Security Service (SSS), and the Nigerian Police all play prominent roles in the fight against the new trend of social vice. The Nigerian Cyber Crime Act was signed into law in 2015. According to officials, the Act provides a unified and comprehensive legal, regulatory and institutional framework for the prohibition, prevention, detection, prosecution and punishment of cyber crimes in Nigeria. This act also ensures the protection of critical national information infrastructure, and promotes cyber security and the protection of computer systems and networks, electronic communications, data and computer programs, intellectual property and privacy rights.
